Zhang
Yong Qiang (Sailing)
Tasked with the development of sailing's 420 programme in Singapore,
he has been making waves in more ways than one. In terms of results,
he and his sailors had an impeccable year. In fact, the list of proteges
under his wing who have done well reads like a "who's who"
of Singapore sailing.
They include Teo Wee Chin and Terence Koh who won the gold medal
at the Youth World Championships in Busan. This win on a global
stage was an unprecedented feat not only for Singapore but also
Asia in a cometition long dominated by Western countries. Dawn Liu
and Siobhan Tam as well as Melcolm Huang and Chung Pei Qun also
shone, finishing seventh and ninth respectively. Then, there were
Justing Wong and Xu Yuan Zhen, who clinched gold at the SEA Games
in the Philippines.
Apart from delivering results, this dedicated coach has made an
impact as a strong advocate of the use of sports science, including
strength and conditioning, nutrition, biomechanics and sport psychology. |
