IOC International Sponsors : |
 |

| |
|
| January 24, 2007--Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, called for greater involvement by sponsors in the sporting world’s attack on doping at a symposium organized by the World Anti-Doping Agency in Lausanne. “The commercial influence in sport continues to grow,'' Rogge told reporters in Lausanne, Switzerland. ``Are sponsors doing enough to create an environment where doping is discouraged? I don't know, but it deserves a closer look.'' |
| Speaking at the opening of the WADA symposium for the media, Rogge described how the doping industry was becoming more sophisticated in its substances, its methods and its distribution network. “If we are going to reverse the situation we are now in, we need more unity in the fight against doping,” Rogge said. |
| Not only does doping destroy the principles of sport and fair play, performance-enhancing drugs carry long-term health risks for the athletes. The IOC and WADA have long encouraged athletes and coaches to speak up against doping. “We need their voice. But they should not be alone,” he said. |
| Rogge also called for a ban on support personnel who have been convicted of helping athletes obtain performance-enhancing drugs. “If needed, we must sanction the bodies which govern sport if they fail to discourage a culture of doping.” |
