SNOC President pays tribute to athletes
who narrowly missed medals in Doha
February 01, 2007--In the midst of the celebrations at the Multi-Million Dollar Award Programme night, National Olympic Council President Teo Chee Hean paid tribute to Singapore’s athletes who came close to medaling at the Doha Asian Games in December 2006.
“Many of them battled tenaciously in their matches, displaying great sportsmanship and fighting spirit against stronger opponents,” said Mr. Teo. He had particular praise for golfer Choo Tze Huang and badminton player Xing Aiying. Choo was tied for third place but lost out on the men’s individual bronze on countback. Xing put down some gutsy plays that made South Korea’s Hwang Hye Yeon earn her victory in the in the women’s singles quarter finals.
Singapore’s team of athletes won eight golds, seven silvers and 12 bronzes—setting an all-time record at the Asian Games. With an eye to the future, Mr. Teo noted that “great athletes pick themselves up and persevere to come back winners.”
