February 26, 2007—Singapore National Olympic Council will host a three-day Sports Medicine Seminar & Workshop in October 8 - 10, 2007 for Asian member countries of the International Olympic Committee, sponsored by the Olympic Solidarity Fund. Dr. Peter Brukner, associate professor at the University of Melbourne and co-author of Clinical Sports Medicine, will be the keynote speaker.
“The workshop is an opportunity for the National Olympic Councils in Asia to look at the issues facing all sports administrators, coaches and athletes today,” said Chris Chan, Secretary General of the Singapore National Olympic Council. “We live in an age where competitive sports have become increasingly complex. Sports science has become a fundamental component of athlete training to prevent injury and ensure a long career for the athlete.”
Geared towards doctors, coaches, physiotherapists and trainers, the Sports Medicine programme will look at the latest research into peak performance training for elite athletes. Sports psychologists, physiologists and biomechanists will lead the discussions. There also will be hands-on workshops in sports science techniques such as clinical gait analysis, water-based sports rehabilitation & training, and effective taping and stretching techniques.
The Sports Medicine programme will also look at a sports medicine field that has often been overlooked by sports administrators: children and youth in competitive sports. The speakers will discuss the impact of asthma on exercise, nutritional needs, age-appropriate strength training and doping control issues. There also will be an intensive look at common soft tissue injuries in children.
The Olympic Solidarity programme supports the National Olympic Councils in their efforts to upgrade the professional skills of their local coaches, officials and sports administrators. For more on Olympic Solidarity, please click here.
