SINGAPORE AIMS TO HOST INAUGURAL YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES IN 2010

August 17, 2007 – Singapore has announced its bid to host the International Olympic Committee’s inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010, with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officially confirming the country’s ambitions. “We are a young, vibrant and cosmopolitan nation,” said Mr. Lee. “I am confident that we can realise the IOC’s vision and goals for the Games.”

In July, the IOC approved plans to stage summer and winter Youth Olympics, for athletes aged 14-18. For the IOC, the YOG will be an important platform to inspire a new generation of athletes with the spirit of the Olympic Games and the values of the Olympic movement.

“Youth from all over the world,” said Mr. Teo Chee Hean, President of the Singapore National Olympic Council, “can live the Olympic values every day while at the Games.” The SNOC is a member of the multi-agency committee driving Singapore’s campaign to host the Youth Olympic Games.

With a nod towards encouraging proactive participation by Singapore’s youth in the bid development process, a dedicated website has been set up where young people can leave ideas for hosting the Youth Games. (For more, please go to www.yog.youth.sg.)

Prime Minister Lee was optimistic that Singapore would produce a memorable Youth Games for athletes from around the world. “The hosting of the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore will have a lasting impact, extending well beyond our shores.”
