National Table Tennis Women's Double Team
- Tan Paey Fern
- Zhang Xueling
Without flamboyance or flair, the Table Tennis Women's Doubles Team
in Tan Paey Fern and Zhang Xueling have come into their own as athletes
to be reckoned with; epitomising diligence, steadfast determination
and a dedication towards continually improving their game.
The secrets to their successful partnership, the paddlers say,
are communication, mutual encouragement, and a chemistry borne of
their five-year collaboration.
As Xueling puts it candidly, "If we don't do well in any game,
it is a matter of technique, not a matter of chemistry."
"We didn't do too badly for 2004," says Paey Fern, whose
view is echoed by Xueling.
The paddlers are modest considering their feats in 2004: a top
16 position in the Table Tennis Women's Doubles in the Athens Olympic
Games and the gold medal at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship.
The events they regard as most memorable in 2004 are not the Olympic
Games but its Asian qualifying rounds. With only six positions for
Asian women's doubles teams, Paey Fern and Xueling held their own
against powerhouse teams from countries such as Japan and North
Korea to qualify for their first Olympic Games.
