The Lions started 2007 on a high note when they retained the Asean
Football Championship by defeating arch rival Malaysia in the semi-final
and then favourite Thailand in the final. To top it off, they achieved
the largest win in their history by beating laos 11-0 in the group stages.
Their impressive form continued as they beat Palestine in the first round
of the FIFA World Cup 2010 ASEAN Qualifiers. Even the retirement of captain
Aide Iskandar just before the second round of qualifiers (first leg) against
Tajikstan did not faze the Lions as they triumphed 2-0 at home. They then
drew 1-1 in the second leg to qulaify for the third round of qualifiers for
the first time in Singapore's history.
Rounding off what had been a good year, the Under-23 team then claimed
a bronze at SEA Games in Thailand. It was Singapore's first football medal
from the Games in many years.
With so many breakthrough performances, it is no wonder that the Lions
have been named Singapore's Team of the Year (Team Sport).
